Leukaemia: “For the longest time, I have wanted to write you a letter…”
Nikkea was diagnosed with a blood cancer called leukaemia. The following are all Nikkea’s words, shared with the Leukaemia Foundation to help raise awareness of blood cancer during September’s Blood Cancer Awareness Month 2019. You can share your story, too, by clicking here.
For the longest time I have wanted to write a letter. but I never knew when the right time would be…until now.
When you came into my life, and decided that you were going to try and kill me, I honestly was going to let you win
I felt like I deserved you because of all the mistakes I have made in my life. but something else happened. Instead, you Leukaemia, actually taught me how to live. You taught me so many things that I needed to know and needed to feel and without you I do not know if I would be the person I am today.
Last year at this time, you and I were battling and you were absolutely kicking my ass and had no intention of letting up… you took me on one hell of a ride …… there were days I wanted to give up….. but I am still here today, fighting you every single day..
You did however help me forgive myself and leave the past behind, you brought me so many amazing people into my life that I never would have met. I also learned who my true friends were, but most of all, you gave me a sense of purpose in allowing me to give other people hope.
You set out to destroy me and my family and possibly kill me, but what you gave me in return was so much more.
You taught me how to live again.
I know I won the battle, but this war is far from over between you and I. You can come back at any moment, and if you do, I WILL be ready. Until then, I will continue to fight and kick your ass!
