Transport Program

The Leukaemia Foundation can provide people with blood cancer and their families with free courtesy transport to and from treatment.

During treatment, a person's immune system is severely weakened, so catching public transport can be dangerous due to possible infections.

The patient transport program commenced in December 1999 as a result of generous sponsorship from Bridgestone Tyre Centres, Holden and the Peter Brock Foundation.

Since that time, a team of dedicated, trained volunteers have driven patients to and from their medical, outpatient and other specialist appointments. The transport program services major treatment centres in metropolitan and regional areas.

This service is specifically designed to relieve the pressure faced by people with blood cancer who are transport disadvantaged. That is, if they have limited private transport options, such as the carer in the family having to return to work.

It also ensures patients arrive at appointments safely and on-time, as well as providing a friendly kind face to greet patients.

We may also be able to assist with alternative transport for patients needing transport from regional or rural areas.

Kilometres travelled since 1 July 2014

Who can use the Patient Transport Program?

Transport is available for all patients needing to get to and from treatment, however priority will be given to people who:

  • are transport disadvantaged
  • are continuing frequent treatments after a bone marrow transplant
  • have low blood counts and at a higher risk of infection
  • are undergoing active treatment
  • are undergoing supportive therapies - eg blood transfusions
  • require admission or day investigations

Our staff will discuss the criteria and person's physical suitability for the service prior to each transport booking.

The Patient Transport Program usually runs between 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

To request a booking, please freecall 1800 620 420.

A minimum of 24 hours notice must be given and if people are unable to attend an appointment, please notify us as soon as possible. This service is free of charge.

If a transport booking is to include children, please discuss this with us. We are equipped with child safety seats. Children under 18 must travel accompanied by an adult responsible for their care.
