Leukaemia Foundation Tony Fini Chair in Blood Cancer Research

The Leukaemia Foundation and The University of WA (UWA) have partnered to establish an Endowed Chair role in Blood Cancer research at UWA.

This Chair role marks a historic milestone – the largest single non-government investment in blood cancer research in Western Australia’s history.

Unlike traditional funding models, this Chair is endowed in perpetuity, creating a permanent platform for world-class research and a long-term commitment to tackling one of Australia’s fastest-growing and most complex cancers.

Responding to a growing national challenge

Blood cancer is one of Australia’s most rapidly increasing cancers, with incidence rising by 90% since 2003. Without significant intervention, the number of Australians diagnosed with blood cancer is expected to double over the next 10-15 years.

Blood cancer doesn’t discriminate – it affects every community and every generation. Without bold action, the number of people affected will continue to rise. This Chair is a critical step towards changing that future for the better.

A powerful new focus on prevention, early detection and diagnostics

The Chair will focus on areas that have historically received the least attention and funding in blood cancer research – prevention, early detection, and diagnostics.

Over the past two decades, less than 10% of blood cancer research funding in Australia has gone towards these critical areas, compared with 20-55% for other major cancers like breast, prostate, and melanoma.

By focusing on early intervention and prevention, the Chair aims to shift the research paradigm – from reacting to advanced disease to stopping cancer in its tracks before it takes hold.

This investment will accelerate discoveries that detect blood cancer earlier, prevent disease from developing, improve quality of life and give Australians the best possible chance of survival, while also mentoring and fostering excellence in the next generation of Australian researchers.

This landmark initiative would not have been possible without the vision and generosity of our donors, whose commitment is helping create a lasting legacy – one that will change the outlook for people living with blood cancer for generations to come.
