Transport services

We put people with blood cancer on the road to recovery by helping them get to their medical appointments in a way that’s right for them.

If you’ve been diagnosed with a blood cancer, you may have to regularly travel for medical appointments, monitoring, or to receive medical treatment.

For some people, the cost of travelling to appointments cause stress or financial burden. Others may not always be able to call on a friend or carer to help.

The side effects of treatment may also mean you can no longer drive. Or your treatment may have left your immune system severely weakened, making catching public transport potentially dangerous due to possible infections.

Our newly tailored transport service gives you complete control over their own journey to treatment, with easily accessible services, saving money and worry.

Our transport service is always evolving to better meet the needs of the blood cancer community, an evolution proudly supported by Bridgestone and its network since 1986.

What’s available for you?

Services include:

  • referrals to other transport providers
  • fuel, uber or taxi vouchers
  • help completing applications for other providers.

Our transport service is available no matter what type of blood cancer someone has or where they are on their cancer journey.

The service helps hundreds of of people make it to their medical appointments each year, all possible thanks to the people and organisations in the community who generously support our cause.

The team can also help people access lots of other life-changing Leukaemia Foundation support services that can help them to conquer their blood cancer.

Eligibility

Our enhanced transport service pulls down the barriers standing in the way of people travelling to their blood cancer treatment.

It’s simple: no matter where you live in Australia, if you have a blood cancer and you need some assistance to get to your treatment or appointment for that blood cancer, then you’re eligible!

Our service opens the door to a variety of trusted providers that can cater for many different circumstances, including those with mobility issues, out-of-hours appointments and parents travelling with children.

Our transport service is inclusive and accessible to a large and diverse group of people across Australia, giving everyone with blood cancer the chance to access transport support.

The enhanced service was made possible thanks to a pilot program funded by long-term partner, Bridgestone. The new mobility options continue to be driven by Bridgestone and the Bridgestone network.

There will be some priorities if you’re receiving active treatment, undergoing stem cell therapy or blood transfusions. However, support options will be available regardless of which stage of the blood cancer journey you’re on.

Accessing the transport service

There are a few different ways, so we encourage you to use whichever method works best for you.

  • Fill out the online transport application form.
  • Give us a call on 1800 555 021 and speak to one of our team members
  • You might also get a direct referral to the service from one of our Blood Cancer Support Coordinators as well as social workers or welfare officers.

We do have a turnaround of 2 business days, but if your request is for a date within that time period, we encourage you to pick up the phone and call us to talk about your options.

Other options – Patient Assisted Travel

If you need to travel long distances or interstate to receive medical treatment, each state has a financial assistance scheme that can subsidise the cost of transport and accommodation. If you’d like more information about accessing these schemes, give our team a call on 1800 555 021.
