Dedicated to beating blood cancers
As a medical researcher funded by us, Therese Vu spends every day beating blood cancers. But in a few weeks she will show just how committed she is to helping patients and supporting our work when she shaves off her long hair.
Therese, a researcher at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute for the past nine years, will join thousands of other Queenslanders for World’s Greatest Shave from 12-15 March to raise $5 million to fund patient support services and research to find cures.
“I’m so grateful that I can make a difference, not only as a researcher but by getting involved in World’s Greatest Shave,” Therese said.
“I have a personal connection with blood cancer as my classmate died of leukaemia when we were 10 and my close friend’s mother died when we were 22.
“Signing up for World’s Greatest Shave reminds me of the many blood cancer patients who lose their hair in treatment and who are desperately relying on researchers like me for improved treatments and cures.”
Myeloproliferative neoplasms research
Therese is currently working on a project, funded by us, that aims to understand the role of a gene that may be involved in transforming a blood disorder called myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) into acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).
“A better understanding of the gene may lead to new ways to intervene early and prevent the development of AML in some patients,” she said.
