U.G.L.Y. bartenders needed for a beautiful cause!

Wednesday, 02 April 2014

The Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland is once again searching for a Queensland bartender to be crowned U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year all in the name of a beautiful cause. If you’re an U.G.L.Y. bartender – that is Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You – then get on board with this fundraising event running 20 July to 2 September and help support people living with blood cancers.
All you need to do is visit www.uglybartender.org.au, come up with some fundraising ideas and aim to win some fantastic prizes including an ice machine for the top fundraiser’s venue, thanks to principal sponsor Hoshizaki, and a $3,000 travel voucher. There are heaps of tips on the website to help take traditional bar fundraisers like raffles and meat trays to the next level.
Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland CEO, Bill Petch said the U.G.L.Y Bartender of the Year was a great opportunity for community-minded bartenders to host a fun event and in the process raise awareness for a serious cause.
“The fun and relaxed atmosphere enjoyed at pubs and clubs creates an ideal environment for fundraising and even more so when you add a vivacious bartender with a heart of gold to the mix,” Mr Petch said.
“Last year Queensland bartenders raised more than $228,000 which went towards providing vital support services to patients and families whose lives have been devastated by blood cancer.”
“The funds raised from the U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year competition assist the Foundation in providing a range of support services to patients and their families including free home-away-from-home accommodation for patients who have to relocate to Brisbane or Townsville to undergo life-saving treatment.”
Karyn Williamson of Cooyar Hotel was named the 2012 U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year after raising a staggering $15,580. Having lost her husband to leukaemia twenty-one years ago, Karyn was inspired to help raise funds for the Foundation to assist others living with blood cancer.
“Last year was the third year we took part in U.G.L.Y. The support of the local community was great,” Karyn said.
“We had fun and it gave the community a great chance to get together. I am so proud of my community for doing this for me and for getting behind me.”
If you’re a big-hearted bartender like Karyn, go online and register immediately.
The Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation and depends on the generosity of individuals, communities and businesses to continue providing free support services to patients and families, along with investing in medical research.
