Queensland bartenders get U.G.L.Y.!

Wednesday, 02 April 2014

From now until 2 September, more than 230 big-hearted Queensland bartenders will get into the fundraising spirit and battle it out to become the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland’s 2013 U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year. Don’t let the name put you off, U.G.L.Y. stands for “understanding, generous, likeable, you!” and it’s all for a beautiful cause.

The U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year kicked off on Saturday 20 July and will run for six weeks in pubs, hotels, sporting clubs and RSLs across the Sunshine State. Throughout the competition, participants will get creative and host a range of fundraising events with proceeds benefiting the six Queenslanders diagnosed with a blood cancer every day.

The Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland CEO, Bill Petch, said that the U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year was a fun and unique campaign that raised vital funds to benefit blood cancer patients and their families.

“U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year is a fantastic opportunity for big hearted bartenders to come up with some creative fundraising ideas, have some fun with their regulars and spread the word about the work of the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland,” Mr Petch said.

“This is the third year the competition has run statewide and it continues to grow in popularity each year,” he said.

“So far more than 230 Queensland bartenders have registered for the quirky fundraiser, surpassing last year’s registration total of 177 bartenders.”

“Last year the fundraising total came to $228,000 and I am confident that we can beat that record this year.”

Mr Petch said he was grateful for the hospitality industry’s support and hoped the community would get behind their local U.G.L.Y. bartenders by sponsoring them at uglybartender.org.au or giving generously at participating pubs.

Top Queensland fundraiser’s in this year’s U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year campaign will be in the running for terrific prizes.

The winner will receive a $3,000 travel voucher, and their supporting venue will have a chance to win a Hoshizaki ice machine valued at $7,500, thanks to principal sponsor Hoshizaki.

The winner will be announced on September 6. To find out more about the competition visit uglybartender.org.au or ph: 1800 002 244.

The Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation that receives no ongoing government funding and relies on the support of individuals and businesses to fund research projects and provide care and support, free of charge, to patients and their families including transportation, accommodation and counselling.
