Bartenders battle it out in U.G.L.Y. competition

Tuesday, 28 July 2015

Things are about to get downright U.G.L.Y in bars, pubs, hotels and clubs as hundreds of bartenders across Queensland go head-to-head in a unique fundraising competition.

Now in its fifth year, the U.G.L.Y. (Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You) Bartender of the Year is an annual state-wide fundraising competition held from Saturday 1 August until Monday 14 September to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland.

.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year sees big-hearted bartenders compete to raise the most money for patients and their families affected by blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland Events Fundraising Manager, Cassandra Creed, said locals can get behind their favourite bartenders by attending fundraising events, or simply by putting spare change in their donation buckets.

“We’re calling last drinks on leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma and asking everyone to show their U.G.L.Y. side by supporting their local bartenders or even signing up themselves,” Cassandra said.

“Surprisingly, blood cancers claim the lives of more Australians than more well-known cancers such as breast or skin cancer and we hope the money raised from U.G.L.Y will go a long way to help the 31 Australians diagnosed each day with a blood cancer,” she said.

The U.G.L.Y winner will be crowned on Friday 18 September with a $3000 travel voucher up for grabs as the top prize along with prizes for the winning fundraiser’s venue.

To sign-up or sponsor a bartender visit www.uglybartender.org.au or phone 1800 002 244.

The Leukaemia Foundation is the only Queensland charity dedicated to improving the lives of blood cancer patients and their families and receives no on-going government funding.

In addition to investing in research towards finding better treatments, the Leukaemia Foundation supports blood cancer patients and their families by providing a range of free support services such as accommodation during cancer treatment, transport, emotional and financial support and education.
