Research Grants-in-Aid Program 2009

The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national not-for-profit foundation dedicated to the care and cure of patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma, and related blood disorders. Through its National Research Program, the Foundation seeks to foster innovative research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of these cancers, and the care of patients and families. The program includes grants for research projects, in addition to scholarships and fellowships to foster the careers of talented young scientists and doctors. The Program also supports national research facilities, like the PricewaterhouseCoopers Leukaemia and Lymphoma Tissue Bank, the Leukaemia Foundation Research Laboratory at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, and funds selected clinical trials undertaken by the Australasian Leukaemia and Lymphoma Group.

The Leukaemia Foundation invites expressions of interest for grants-in-aid for research projects to support basic, applied and translational research in Australia into the causes, treatment and care of people living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders. Applicants are encouraged to develop innovative approaches to haematological problems, especially in the areas of basic or fundamental research.

Expressions of interest will be reviewed to assess their relevance to haematological cancers and their scientific merit. An invitation to submit a full application will be issued to a short list of approximately ten applicants.

All applications for funding by the Leukaemia Foundation in every state and territory are now assessed through one central national process. This includes applications for funds which are state specific by request of donor(s). Unless specified otherwise, all grant-in-aid applications should be made through the single expressions of interest application form.

Applications for grants-in-aid in the range $50,000 - $100,000 per annum will be considered for research staff salaries and/or maintenance costs to support research projects. It is envisaged that at least three grants-in-aid may be awarded nationally in 2009. In addition, state based funds may become available in some states. If so, we will notify potential applicants via this website. All applications are assessed in the same independent process by the national Grants Review Committee chaired by Professor Andrew Boyd.

Grants will be awarded for one year.

Closing date for receipt of expressions of interest is 25 July 2008.
NO Late applications will be accepted.
Successful expression of interest applicants can expect to be notified in early September.

Application forms and guidelines for applicants can be downloaded from the bottom of this page.

  1. The Leukaemia Foundation wishes to support research in Australia into the causes, treatment and care of people with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.
  2. Persons working in a public hospital, university, or recognized research institute in Australia will be eligible to apply for research funding, fellowships and scholarships from the Foundation.
  3. Applications for Grants-in-Aid will be considered for specific projects to support any of the following:
    • Salaries for research workers;
    • Maintenance costs for research projects.
  4. Expressions of interest are invited once per year.
  5. Expressions of interest must follow the format prescribed by the Foundation, as detailed in the ‘Outline of Format for Expressions of Interest’ section.
  6. Expressions of interest will first be reviewed by a national, external panel of independent experts (Grants Review Committee - GRC) to assess their relevance and their scientific merit. An invitation to submit a full application will be issued to a short list. The invited full applications will be reviewed and ranked by the GRC and recommendations for funding will be made to the LF National Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee (NMSAC).
  7. The NMSAC will recommend to the Board of the Leukaemia Foundation in rank order, those applications worthy of funding, with recommendations where appropriate as to the level of funding for each application. The Board will decide which, if any, applications to approve for funding in any year after considering the recommendations of the NMSAC and the availability of funds.
  8. Salaries will be according to National Health and Medical Research Council Scales as published from time to time. Once a salary level has been approved no additional funding will be provided to pay a higher level of salary.
  9. In applying for research funding from the Foundation, applicants confirm that they will:

    • That a financial statement (outlining budget and expenditure against the project) will be provided annually by the institution to the Foundation for each grant funded by the Foundation;
    • That physical facilities and infrastructure support will be provided and maintained to allow research under the grant to proceed.
    • That the applicant has the work time available to undertake the proposed study when existing commitments are considered
  11. Any grant will be conditional upon the relevant institution and the applicant(s) entering into an appropriate form of agreement with the Leukaemia Foundation as to the disposition of the grant.
  12. Recipients of grants may be asked by the Foundation to present the results of the research funded by the Leukaemia Foundation at a public symposium, in media or other promotional activity organised by the Foundation.
