Microscopic organisms which cause many types of infectious disease, for example pneumonia. The reduced ability of patients to fight infections following chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation means that even normally harmless bacteria existing, for example, on the skin or mouth, may cause serious illness. Bacteria often are easier to treat than viruses.
