Thank you - you’ve raised $16 million!

Overwhelming community support for this year’s World’s Greatest Shave has helped more than 150,000 enthusiastic shavers, waxers and hair-colourers raise an incredible $16 million to support the vital work of the Leukaemia Foundation.

After a life-shattering diagnosis of blood cancer, families need emotional and practical support to help them through the most difficult challenge of their lives, and families like the Sherrah’s say that they would have been lost without the Leukaemia Foundation’s caring and sensitive support during their time of need.

Getting sponsored to shave, wax or colour during World’s Greatest Shave is an extraordinary way to make a phenomenal impact… Not only are you improving the day-to-day lives of people with a blood cancer, you are also helping Australia’s best researchers like Professor Maher Gandhi to discover better treatments and find cures for blood cancer.

“Leukaemia Foundation funding is vital to our work… it’s so hard to quantitate its sheer value,” said Professor Maher Gandhi. “There just isn’t a lot of funding of blood cancer research outside the Leukaemia Foundation’s National Research Program so the scholarships and grants available are really crucial to advancing our knowledge of blood cancer.”

The good news is that survival rates are improving, and with public support the Leukaemia Foundation can continue to support start-up research programs in blood cancer to help families who are impacted by a life-shattering diagnosis.

For dedicated researchers like Associate Professor Claire Wakefield, it was critical Leukaemia Foundation seed funding that progressed her small research program into a fully-fledged national survivorship care plan with a grant valued at $2.7 million.

“The Leukaemia Foundation enabled me to set the scene to secure much bigger grants to research a national survivorship care plan for survivors of childhood cancer,” said A/Prof Wakefield. “It was the Leukaemia Foundation’s support which started the whole program.”

Your generosity is ensuring families whose lives have been turned upside-down by blood cancer are receiving the vital support they need: a free home-away-from-home near hospital during their treatment, transport to appointments and as much practical assistance and emotional support as we can, all free of charge.

Your kindness is also helping Australia’s best researchers advance our understanding of how blood cancers develop so they can find kinder treatments and, ultimately, cures.

Thank you for joining us for this year’s World’s Greatest Shave. This amazing result is worth sharing with your family and friends and please encourage others to consider how they too can help make a real difference for all Australians living with a blood cancer.
