Making every step count for Stadium Stomp
Publish Date: 14/4/2016
Do you have what it takes to tackle Stadium Stomp this June for a mighty cause? The ultimate stair climbing challenge leads brave participants up, down and around the stadium bay stairs of the MCG, one of the largest stadiums on the planet.
Traversing literally thousands of stairs along the way, this is a stadium stair climb where you can make every step count for families like the Demeo’s, who understand first-hand how vital the Leukaemia Foundation’s support is when facing blood cancer.
When Jayne’s daughter Jordyn was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukaemia, a rare blood cancer, in September 2013, the Demeo family learned they needed to relocate from Bendigo to Melbourne for months of treatment.
Jayne remembers just the idea of the constant travel was exhausting and she was grateful for the unexpected practical support the Leukaemia Foundation provided.
“Our worry was alleviated when the Leukaemia Foundation stepped in providing Jordyn and I with a fully furnished, two-bedroom apartment to call home for three and a half months,” said Jayne.
“Without this wonderful gift, we would have had so much stress added to our journey and we would not have been able to stay together as a family.
Extremely thankful, Jayne says it became a home for their whole family when the weekends came around, enabling her husband Nick and their youngest daughter Ruby to stay together.
This support – as well as Jordyn’s tenacity and courage in the face of her blood cancer is what inspired her to complete the mammoth task of Stadium Stomp this year.
“Jordyn hasn’t let the last two and a half years of treatment and medications slow her down. She always takes on every challenge with a smile and it helps me to do the same and face anything that does come our way.”
If you can’t participate in Stadium Stomp but would still like to help the Leukaemia Foundation provide emotional and practical support for families facing blood cancer, please make a valuable donation today or find out about other ways to help.
